BookWright feature requests

I recently finished a book using Bookwright for the first time and I have  a list of suggestions for functionality that would make this GREAT software. I have made books in Booksmart and also using InDesign. I like certain features of Bookwright, especially the ability to easily make custom layouts, but there are a few things missing that made working with it somewhat frustrating. Some of these are currently in Booksmart, so I would think they could be added without much problem, but I'm not a software designer, so I assume there are limitations. Anyway, here's my list:
1. Styles for fonts - Booksmart lets you create styles for headings, body, captions, etc - makes life a lot easier than having to set the font and size and other features each time.
2. Borders around photos - FAQs say this is coming by the end of 2014, but it's now Jan 2015, so I assume it's taking longer than expected. Too bad. It's something I would have liked to have in my book.
3. Ability to specify size of a photo or text box when creating layouts - it's too hard to try to get to just the right size (and sometimes it won't stop on a specific number) when dragging out the size of the box.
4. Hovering over a box - especially a photo box - should show the size of the box. This would be VERY helpful. Sometimes I created a layout and then I couldn't remember the exact sizes of the boxes, so I'd have to move the edges to see the size so that I cpuld size the photo properly when exporting from Lightroom. Not very efficient!
5. It would be nice to be able to select boxes and then click to align them (like in edit layout in booksmart). The blue alignment indicators are great, but sometimes I spent too much time moving things gently to get them aligned and I was never sure if I was moving something else out of alignment at the same time. Still, the blue lines are a great feature and a great start.
There's also a small technical glitch - when you copy and paste a container, sometimes the pasted container is somewhere really weird - like on another page, and I sometimes had to look around for it! But this is just a glitch I think.
Thanks for creating Bookwright. I love blurb and this was my 22nd book, so I hope you continue with your successes. I will probably go back to InDesign for my next book until these features are added to Bookwright, but it was fun to try it out.

I think it would be very helpful to add a tag or two to photos when you upload them so you can find them more easily for each section/chapter you are working on. Alternately, let us upload photos to different chapters or folders.

I have just downloaded BookWright for a book I am currently writing. I had been impressed by the 'simplicity of use' promoted by Blurb. I have to say that I have been rather disappointed so far.

There are a few features missing that will mean I can not use BookWright.

These are, in no particular order:

  • The inability to import a photo into a text container containing text. This would be to utilise a text wrap function.
  • The inability to draw shapes (squares, circles, rectangles etc). This is required to provide a backing to, say, headline text that is placed above a picture. These shapes would need some form of opacity functionality. It also needed for graphic design purposes.
  • The inability to add a background colour to a single page. As far as I see, the best one can do is change the background to two consecutive pages.
  • The inability to set a consistent footer / header and to change page font.
  • Imported high quality images of over 3000 x 1200 pxls are showing as being of 'low image resolution'.
  • The inability to set 'Styles' for fonts - makes life a lot easier than having to set the font and size and other features each time.
  • The inability to specify the size of a photo or text box when creating layouts - it's too hard to try to get to just the right size.
  • The inability to easily align text or image containers horizontally or vertically or both. Also the inability to set a specific position for these containers on the page.

I had been very excited to try BookWright only for this to be dashed very quickly.

Cheers....Scotty

Folders for photos to help organize instead of one long stream

A way to resize a photo container and the photo at the same time.  I change the size of the container and then have to reframe the picture in it.

I have 2 monitors.  I would like to be able to “undock” the thumbnails and put them on the other monitor and make them larger.

I would like to be able to hide/unhide all the pages on command.  I don’t need to see them all the time.

If you can already do things then make them a bit more intuitive to find
