How to add an image with transparent background in Bookwright

I want to layer images. I have a background image and I want to place another image (say a hand) over the background and only want the hand itself and not the white background. What I tried: I've done it 1000 times without issue until now. Take an image into a photo editor (in this case Paint.net), select all but the hand (background) and delete that selection. The background should no be transparent. When I bring this saved image into blurb, the white background persists. What am I missing?

I figured out that PNG works when a transparent background is present, JPG does not. I no longer need to enter a ticket, as PNG will suffice.
