I taught yearbook design for ten years and what I told my students is that you do NOT want to put a face in the gutter. If you bleed a photo across the gutter there will be some of the photo that falls into the stitching and will be lost. It depends on the size of the book as to exactly how much. To be safe, again just dont put a face in the gutter, use the negative space of the photo.
How much will the gutter cut off?
i'm designing a photobook that has spreads across the gutters. It will be less that 30 pages, hard cover, 8.5x11. how much in reality will the gutter cut off? or should i just play it safe and move my designs around?
