I have the same concern. I'm using Photoshop CC and need to know how blank photo boxes will print. Will there be a grey square or nothing?
What will print on finished book if one photo spot left blank?
I am using Lightroom 4 to design the book and have my background set to black with a photo on the cover. I would like to leave the back of my book blank. I have no photo currently but it shows it as half grey to show where the photo would go. If I leave that area blank will it just print black or will it print showing the grey photo box? I am sure it would print blank but I want to be sure before I submit my order. Thank you!

I have the same concern, but found for sake of comfort, you can increase the cell padding one the image cells you want blank to maximum, and thus even in preview will see the background directly.
Correction - I found out doing this is why I had trouble rendering/creating my book. Seems an error occurs either rendering fully padded out cells with an image squashed in it, or, I was populating these cells with duplicate images (as they wouldn't be seen anyway).
So I found the best way to verify that the final rendered version does not leave blank grey cells is to save it as a pdf... and you'll see that the un-filled cells render as background image/color.
I still like my cell padding approach just to observe what the final page preview will look like. But then, you have to un-pad the cells before rendering.
Would be nice if lightroom allowed a preview of the page.
