I had thought of doing the same thing and am sorry that it hasn't been answered.
I duplicated my book in order to make two versions. Only problem is now I don't seem to have access to the templates or my photos.
The only thing I know to do is manually create each page with text & image and drag my pictures from iPhoto (actually had to put on desktop and then drag the pictures). Did I do something wrong in duplicating the book? Is there an easier way?

After duplicating the book and you no longer see the layouts or photos on the left side, click on VIEW and make sure "Apply Page Layout" and "Content Library" are both checked. This will restore the layout and photos on your screen.
How did you duplicate the book in the first place?
To duplicate my book, I went to BookSmart > File > Duplicate Book
