ebooks for more than just Apple products?

I love the option to convert to ebook form. However, I believe in cross platform accessibility and Blurb only does iOS. Besides the lesser market, my own audience uses Android , Kindle, Nook and Windows as well as iProducts. and I would alienate people.

Does anyone know a source for conversion to ebooks with decent copy protection? Blurb says it has "no plans" to remedy this situation.

I was referred to Blurb because of the affordable encryption bundled with the book price, but this makes it a nonstarter. Need something of reasonable cost. Please help?

Hi Katamataka,

my name is Brady and I'm the Product Manager for ebooks at Blurb. Thank you for your feedback about viewing fixed-layout ebooks on platforms besides iOS. While we do create reflowable ebooks that you can sell and view on other platforms (including Amazon, Google, B&N) we're in the process of addressing your request for fixed-layout ebook portability as well. Stay tuned!

With respect to DRM and copy protection Blurb does not provide that service. All ebooks downloadable from Blurb are DRM free. However, when you take your ebook to sell on the Apple iBooks Store you can opt to enable DRM copy protection with that marketplace.

Cheers,
Brady

Hi Katamataka,

We now support creation of EPUB3 and KF8 (Kindle .mobi) fixed-layout ebooks. These files are viewable on Kindle, iPad, Android and Kobo devices. B&N NOOK is not supported. You can read more about it here.

Thank you,
Brady

Brady - the eBook template for InDesign only has a preset for IPad. unless I'm missing something? can you confirm there are templates for Kindle, iPad, Android and Kobo devices? if so - how do I access those templates? thanks! -Luke

Hi Luke,

I can see why that would be confusing. The InDesign template for iPad can be used for any of our *fixed-layout* ebook formats. After uploading your PDF you can choose to convert it to an ebook and both an epub3 and Kindle kf8 (.mobi) file will be created for you to download. I'll work with our team to improve that label in the template.

Please note this template is not for reflowable ebooks which can only be created using BookWright.

Thanks,
Brady

Brady,

two problems with using the PDF -> eBook creator.

1) if I've licensed fonts on my own, will Blurb recognize those in the conversion? or does it still automatically replace?

2) Kindle Fire has a different aspect ratio then iPad, so it won't be formatted correctly. templates for the various aspect ratios would be needed.

thanks,

-Luke

Hi Luke,

1) you are correct. Fonts will be substituted in the online ebook editor. If you want to preserve the fonts you need to render each page as an image.

2) it's true the aspect ratios are different, so while the ebook is viewable on kindle it may not completely fill up the screen. We'll investigate adding a kindle-specific ebook template for the future.
